New South Wales - Sustainable Energy Development Authority

In NSW, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) has successfully managed an ENERGY STAR programme since 1997, and it is this programme that was amplified into the National programme. Partnerships have been forged with many leading office equipment and home electronics suppliers and major NSW customers, resulting in thousands of dollars worth of savings across the NSW commercial and residential sector. ENERGY STAR is enabled as part of SEDA's Energy Smart Business, Building Greenhouse Rating and Energy Smart Government programmes.

Energy Star products are also promoted through SEDA's Live Energy Smart programme, which encourages NSW residents to adopt energy efficient products and behaviours.

Northern Territory

The Government Energy Management programme (GEMP), within the NT Department of Transport and Works, was established in 1986 to help Northern Territory Government agencies manage their energy costs and consumption through:

  • funding energy conservation projects
  • providing energy management services
  • monitoring and reporting on building energy consumption
  • pursuing whole-of-government strategic frameworks.

The two key foci of the new NT Government Energy Management Strategy are to achieve a 5% reduction in energy use per person in 2-3 years and to develop mandatory building energy performance standards for government buildings.
To help agencies achieve a 5% per person energy use reduction, GEMP promotes the activation of ENERGY STAR features on personal computers and other office equipment where technically feasible.

Queensland - Environmental Protection Agency

The Queensland Environmental Protection Agency's Sustainable Industries Division promotes the development and uptake of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency initiatives in Queensland.

Partnerships with industry promote and facilitate the implementation of sustainable energy practices and technologies, addressing both business practice and building design. The Queensland Sustainable Energy Innovation Fund, a joint project with industry, provides assistance in developing products and services that encourage the efficient and sustainable production and use of energy in Queensland.

The Energy Advisory Service provides impartial, professional advice on energy efficiency and renewable energy for householders, educators and small business people. The services offered include:

  • demonstrating ways to make a home or building more energy efficient, using a combination of simple design principles, insulation and ventilation, appropriate building materials, window protection and shading
  • providing a house plan energy assessment and rating service (by arrangement only)
  • helping householders and small businesses save on their energy costs for lighting, heating/cooling, appliances, hot water, office equipment
  • developing energy audit kits for householders, small business and schools
  • promoting the use of renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, water, biomass, cogeneration
  • advising on the Queensland and Commonwealth Government rebate schemes that encourage the use of renewable resources, including the Solar Hot Water Rebate Scheme, the Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS) Rebate Scheme, the Working Property Rebate Scheme, the Photovoltaic Rebate programme for community buildings and for residential purposes
  • providing a list of suppliers of energy efficient products and energy management services
  • providing student resources and a reference collection.

South Australia - Energy SA

Through Energy SA the South Australian Government has developed a series of Sustainable Energy Objectives and taken a number of initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy use. Government Energy Management has been prepared to address reducing energy waste in public sector operations. South Australia works closely with State, Territory and Commonwealth governments on national programmes such as the National Greenhouse Strategy and the Greenhouse Challenge. The State also contributes to international energy efficiency understanding through CADDET.

The Energy SA Advisory Centres provide a free, independent advisory service on all aspects on energy, its efficient use and safety practices. Staff provide this service to visitors, and for phone, fax and email enquiries. A wide range of literature is available to be picked up or posted out. An internet service is available for visitors to access the Energy SA website at www.energy.sa.gov.au for specific detailed information. The Centres are located on the ground floor of 101 Grenfell Street and L16, 30 Wakefield Street, Adelaide. They are open to the public Monday to Friday 8.45am to 5.00pm. New Zealand - Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority

ENERGY STAR compliant office equipment is currently available in New Zealand, and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority actively promotes the use of energy efficient equipment and appliances. Personal computers and other office equipment use a significant, and growing, proportion of the energy consumed in commercial buildings. This adds to electrical load and energy use directly, and by adding to airconditioning requirements in many buildings.

The office equipment programme seeks to reduce this energy use by way of two initiatives:

  • The Switch Off campaign aims to reduce the considerable amount of wastage that occurs when equipment is left running overnight and at weekends.
  • The ENERGY STAR initiative aims to promote the activation of the ENERGY STAR power-down features which are available in most new PCs and other equipment but are often not activated by suppliers or users.
